The exact figure, and why it is exact
A mile contains 5,280 feet. Not approximately, not to within a tolerance — exactly. That distinction matters more than it first appears, because most unit relationships are the product of measurement and carry uncertainty. This one does not.
In 1959, the national standards bodies of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed to define the international yard as exactly 0.9144 metres. That single decision cascaded: a foot became exactly 0.3048 metres, and a mile — already defined as 1,760 yards — became exactly 1,609.344 metres, or 5,280 feet.
Because these are definitions, there is no error bar anywhere in the conversion. When this site tells you 35,000 feet is 6.6288 miles, the only imprecision is the rounding you asked for at four decimal places. The underlying arithmetic is exact.

Converting feet to miles
Divide by 5,280. That is the entire operation. If you have 10,000 feet, then 10,000 ÷ 5,280 = 1.8939 miles. If you have 500 feet, 500 ÷ 5,280 = 0.0947 miles.
The reverse is a multiplication: miles × 5,280 = feet. Two miles is 10,560 feet; a quarter mile is 1,320 feet. Fractional miles land on whole feet surprisingly often, because 5,280 divides cleanly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 20 — a legacy of a measurement system built for splitting land into halves and thirds without a calculator.

Where 5,280 actually comes from
The Roman mile was the mille passus — a thousand paces, each pace being two steps of roughly 5 feet, giving about 5,000 feet. Had nothing else intervened, a mile would be a round 5,000 feet and this article would be much shorter.
What intervened was English agriculture. Farmland was measured in furlongs — the length of a furrow a team of oxen could plough before resting — standardised at 660 feet. Land records, taxes and property boundaries were all denominated in furlongs, and no one was going to re-survey the country to suit a Roman unit.
In 1593, Parliament resolved the conflict by redefining the mile as 8 furlongs rather than 5,000 feet. Eight times 660 is 5,280. The awkward number is the fossil of a compromise between Roman marching and English ploughing, and it has survived every subsequent reform.
The three mistakes people actually make
First, using 5,000 instead of 5,280. The approximation is fine for a rough mental estimate but introduces a 5.3% error — over a 26-mile marathon, that is nearly a mile and a half.
Second, confusing the statute mile with the nautical mile. A nautical mile is 6,076.1 feet, about 15% longer, and it is the mile used in aviation and at sea. Converting an aircraft's distance with 5,280 gives a badly wrong answer.
Third, using the length factor for an area conversion. A square mile is not 5,280 square feet — it is 5,280 squared, or 27,878,400 square feet. This one is the most expensive mistake on the list because it is off by a factor of 5,280.

The foot itself
If the mile is exact, the foot has to be exact too — and it is. Since 1959 a foot has been defined as precisely 0.3048 metres. It was not measured; the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa agreed it in a single treaty.
Before that, each country's foot differed slightly. The gap was small — a few parts per million — but it was enough to cause trouble when survey data or manufacturing specifications crossed a border.
So today there are three numbers to remember and all three are exact: 12 inches per foot, 5,280 feet per mile, and 0.3048 metres per foot. Every other value on this site is derived from those three.
One exception is worth naming. Until the end of 2022 the United States kept a second foot for geodetic survey — the US survey foot, longer by about two parts per million. It has been deprecated, but it survives in older land records, so if you are working from pre-2023 data it is worth checking which foot it used.
