The Roman mile: a thousand paces
The word 'mile' comes from mille passus — a thousand paces. A Roman pace was two steps, left and right, roughly five Roman feet. A thousand of them made about 5,000 Roman feet, and legions used it to measure the roads they built across the empire.
It was a genuinely practical unit. An army could measure a road by walking it, and milestones went in every mille passus. Had the story ended in Rome, the mile would be 5,000 feet and this would be a much duller article.
The furlong: how long an ox can plough
English land measurement grew from farming rather than marching. The furlong — 'furrow long' — was the distance a team of oxen could plough before needing rest, standardised at 40 rods, or 660 feet.
This was not a casual unit. The furlong defined the acre, which defined land tax, property boundaries and inheritance. Centuries of legal records were denominated in furlongs and acres, and every one of them assumed 660 feet.
So England had two incompatible units in daily use: a Roman mile of 5,000 feet, and a furlong of 660 feet that would not divide into it. Five thousand divided by 660 is 7.576 furlongs — an ugly number that made surveying and land conveyancing needlessly painful.

1593: Parliament picks the farmers
The Act of Parliament of 1593 settled it by redefining the mile as exactly 8 furlongs. Eight times 660 is 5,280, and from that moment the mile was 5,280 feet.
The reasoning was straightforward. Changing the furlong would have invalidated every land record in the country. Changing the mile affected almost nothing, because the mile was mainly used for travel distances that nobody held title to.
It was a sensible decision that produced an inconvenient number, which is a fair summary of most measurement history.
The 5,280 in a mile is not arbitrary. It is 8 × 660, and it exists so that a mile and an acre would finally agree with each other.
1959: the last piece
The mile stayed at 5,280 feet, but the foot itself remained slightly different between countries — British and American feet differed by a few parts per million, enough to matter in geodetic survey work.
The 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement fixed this by defining the yard as exactly 0.9144 metres in all signatory countries. That made the foot exactly 0.3048 m and the mile exactly 1,609.344 m.
The United States kept a separate 'survey foot' for legacy geodetic data, differing by about two parts per million. It was officially retired at the end of 2022. Unless you are working with pre-2023 US survey records, the international foot is the only one you need.

Why the world did not simply go metric
France introduced the metric system in 1795, and within a century almost all of Europe had switched. Britain and the United States did not, and the reasons were economic rather than scientific.
By the time the conversation turned serious, every factory, every land record and every textbook was tied to the imperial system. The cost of switching — retooling, resurveying, retraining — was always larger than the visible benefit in any given year.
The United States passed a Metric Conversion Act in 1975, but it was voluntary, and only the industries with global customers moved. Hence today: science and medicine metric, construction and roads imperial, and everything else mixed.
The numbers that survived
The furlong, the chain, the rod and the acre are all remnants of the same medieval system, and all of them are alive to some degree.
A rod is 16.5 feet. A chain is 4 rods, or 66 feet. A furlong is 10 chains, or 660 feet. A mile is 8 furlongs, or 5,280 feet. Each step is a small whole number, which was the entire point: the arithmetic had to be doable by someone with a rope and no calculator.
The acre — one chain by one furlong, or 43,560 square feet — is the only one still in everyday commercial use. The others survive in horse racing, in old deeds, and in the number 5,280 itself.

What the mile looks like today
Four countries still use the statute mile on road signs in everyday life: the United States, the United Kingdom, Liberia and Myanmar. Everywhere else the kilometre won.
But the mile did not disappear from those countries — it moved into specialist niches. Aviation reports altitude in feet worldwide. Athletics keeps the mile as a distance in its own right. British road signs use miles while British science uses metres, in the same country on the same day.
The result is that 5,280 remains a number worth knowing even where the mile is not official. It sits inside sports records, flight data, American technical documentation and a great deal of the internet, and none of that is going metric soon.
