A unit derived from the planet
Almost every traditional unit traces back to a human body or a physical artefact — the foot, the cubit, the standard kilogram in a vault. The nautical mile is different. It is derived from the size of the Earth.
One nautical mile is one minute of arc of latitude: one sixtieth of a degree, measured along a meridian. Since a full meridian spans 180 degrees or 10,800 minutes, and the Earth's polar circumference is about 20,004 km, each minute works out at roughly 1,852 metres.
That figure was fixed as an exact definition at the 1929 International Hydrographic Conference. The nautical mile is now exactly 1,852 metres by agreement, which converts to 6,076.11548556 feet — a decimal that never terminates, so every value you see in feet is rounded.

Why navigators kept it
The advantage is that no conversion is needed. If two positions differ by 30 minutes of latitude, they are 30 nautical miles apart. A navigator can measure distance directly off the latitude scale printed on the side of a chart, with dividers and nothing else.
Use statute miles and that relationship disappears, replaced by an arbitrary 1.15078 factor. On a paper chart in poor conditions, that difference is not academic.
The same logic gave us the knot: one nautical mile per hour. A ship making 10 knots covers 10 minutes of latitude every hour, which makes dead reckoning a matter of addition.

1 degree of latitude = 60 nautical miles, anywhere on Earth. That is the entire reason the unit exists.
The 15% trap
A nautical mile is 15.08% longer than a statute mile. That gap is large enough to matter and small enough to look plausible, which is the worst possible combination.
A 500-nautical-mile flight leg is 575 statute miles. Treating one as the other understates the distance by 75 miles — a fuel planning error, not a rounding error.
It is compounded by aviation using both units at once: altitude in feet, distance in nautical miles. Two numbers on the same display, using different miles.

Where you will meet it
Marine navigation and charts, aviation flight planning and ATC, maritime law (territorial waters are 12 nautical miles, the exclusive economic zone 200), and meteorology for storm tracking and wind speeds in knots.
You will not meet it on a road sign, in a running race, or in a property description. If the context is terrestrial and civilian, it is a statute mile.
How 1,852 metres became the number
The original definition was one minute of arc on a great circle of the Earth. The trouble is that the Earth is not perfectly round — it is flattened at the poles, so a minute of latitude is slightly longer near them than at the equator.
At the equator a minute is about 1,843 metres; at the poles about 1,862. Different countries picked different values, and for decades the British, American and international nautical miles disagreed.
It was settled in 1929 at Monaco, where the International Hydrographic Conference chose a round 1,852 metres — close to the average. The United States adopted it in 1954 and Britain in 1970.
So the nautical mile is now exact by definition rather than by measurement of the Earth. It remains close enough to one minute of latitude for navigation — the error is under 10 metres anywhere.
Reading a chart correctly
The practical way to measure distance on a marine chart is to use the latitude scale on the side, never the longitude scale along the bottom. Every minute of latitude is one nautical mile; a minute of longitude shrinks towards the poles.
At the equator a minute of longitude is also about a nautical mile, but at 60° latitude it has halved. That single mistake has caused real navigational errors.
So the rule is simple: measure distance from the side, not the bottom. It is a five-century-old practice, and the same logic applies on a digital chart.

The knot and the rope
A knot is one nautical mile per hour. The name is literal: sailors threw a rope over the stern with knots tied every 47 feet 3 inches, and counted the knots that ran out in 28 seconds.
Those numbers were not arbitrary — they were chosen so the count of knots equalled the speed in nautical miles per hour directly. An analogue calculator made of rope and sand.
Which is why "knots per hour" is wrong. The hour is already inside the knot. Ten knots means ten nautical miles every hour, not ten of anything per anything else.
