The four-laps-isn't-a-mile problem
A standard outdoor track is 400 metres per lap in lane one, which is 1,312.34 feet. Four laps gives 1,600 metres, or 5,249.34 feet.
A mile is 5,280 feet. So four laps falls 30.66 feet short — about 9.34 metres. That is why a track mile is run as four laps plus roughly nine metres, and why the start line for the mile sits slightly behind the 1,600 m start.
It is a small difference, but at elite pace it is worth about a second and a half. For anyone comparing a 1,600 m time to a mile time, that gap is the whole explanation.

Elevation is always in feet
Trail races and elevation profiles report climb in feet almost universally, even in metric countries. A race described as '3,000 ft of gain over 10 miles' is telling you the course climbs 0.57 miles vertically across a 10-mile horizontal distance.
Converting the vertical to miles is genuinely useful for pacing. A widely used rule adds roughly 30 minutes of effort per 1,000 feet of climb, so 3,000 feet is about an extra hour and a half — far more significant than the horizontal distance alone suggests.

The numbers worth memorising
1,640 feet is 499.9 metres — near enough to 500 m to treat as identical in training. 3,281 feet is one kilometre. 5,280 feet is a mile.
For treadmill work, note that a treadmill reporting distance in miles and incline as a percentage is giving you vertical gain you have to compute: a 5% incline over one mile is 264 feet of climb.
And for GPS watches, remember the device is measuring in metres internally regardless of what it displays. A 3.11-mile reading on a 5K is not an error — a 5K genuinely is 3.107 miles.

Why GPS and the official distance disagree
A GPS watch almost always records more than a race's official distance. Over a marathon, 26.4 to 26.6 miles is common instead of 26.219 — an extra 1,000 to 2,000 feet.
This is not a fault. The course is measured along the shortest legal path — tight to every corner, straight down every road. A real runner weaves around other people, takes water at the side, and does not run the perfect line.
GPS adds error of its own. Between tall buildings the signal bounces and the recorded track becomes a zigzag. In a dense city centre the discrepancy is usually larger than on open road.
The practical advice: use the official distance for pace and the GPS for tracking. Arguing about which is "right" will not change your finish time.
The treadmill is not the road
A mile on a treadmill is 5,280 feet of moving belt, not 5,280 feet of ground crossed. There is no air to push through and no change of surface, so it is usually a few seconds per mile easier.
The usual correction is a 1 per cent incline to match outdoor effort. Over a mile, 1 per cent is 52.8 feet of climb — small, but enough to close the gap.
Calibration matters too. Gym treadmills are often out by a few per cent, and it worsens as the belt ages. If your treadmill times are consistently faster than your road times, you probably have not got quicker — the machine is lying.

Building a plan in two units
Most training plans are written in either miles or kilometres, and switching mid-week is a way to make mistakes. Pick one and convert the whole plan in a single sitting.
The quick conversion: multiply miles by 1.609 for kilometres, or divide kilometres by 1.609 for miles. A 6-mile run is 9.7 kilometres; a 10-kilometre run is 6.2 miles.
For track intervals, feet is easier. A 400 m repeat is 1,312 feet; an 800 is 2,625. If your plan says "quarter-mile repeats", that is 1,320 feet — about 8 feet more than one lap, which does not matter in training.
