Why signs use quarters and halves
Highway advance-warning signs count down in fractions — 1 MILE, 1/2 MILE, 1/4 MILE — rather than in feet, because a fraction of a mile is easier to judge at speed than a four-digit number of feet.
The fractions were chosen partly because 5,280 divides so cleanly. A half mile is exactly 2,640 feet, a quarter exactly 1,320, an eighth exactly 660. Sign placement can be surveyed to the foot with no rounding.
At 60 mph — 88 feet per second — a quarter-mile warning gives you 15 seconds. That is the actual design consideration behind the spacing.

How race courses are actually measured
Certified road courses are measured with a calibrated bicycle counter — the Jones Counter — along the shortest legal running line. Measurement is recorded in counts that convert to metres, then reported in whichever unit the race advertises.
Courses are deliberately measured with a short course prevention factor of 0.1%, making a certified marathon about 42 metres long rather than risking it being short. On a marathon that is roughly 138 extra feet.
So a certified marathon is at least 138,435 feet, and usually a little more. A course measured short is not eligible for records; a course measured long simply makes everyone slightly slower.

How a race course is measured
Official course measurement is not done with GPS. It uses a calibrated bicycle fitted with a Jones counter — a mechanical counter on the wheel that counts revolutions.
The bicycle is first calibrated on a precisely measured 300-metre baseline, usually with a steel tape. The course is then ridden along the shortest legal path — tight to every corner, not down the middle of the road.
Measurers also add a short course prevention factor of 0.1 per cent, to guarantee the course is never shorter than the stated distance. So a marathon is always slightly over 42.195 kilometres, never under.
This is why GPS is not acceptable for official certification. An error of a few metres per kilometre is irrelevant in training but decisive for a world record.
Splits worth memorising
If you are running a marathon and want to know whether you are on target, a few mile markers are easier than the whole table.
The 10K mark is 6.214 miles, about a quarter of the race. Halfway is 13.109 miles. 30K is 18.641 miles — usually where the real difficulty starts.
In feet those marks are 32,808, 69,218 and 98,425. Runners rarely use these figures, but they are useful when reading an elevation profile, which is in feet — same unit, easy comparison.
The final mile is 5,280 feet. The final kilometre is 3,281. Know which the course markers use before you start counting down.
Why 26.2 is not a round number
The marathon is 42.195 kilometres — 26 miles and 385 yards. The odd addition comes from the 1908 London Olympics, where the route was lengthened so the race could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box.
That distance became official in 1921 and has not changed since. So every marathon in the world carries the residue of a favour done for a king.
In feet: 138,435. If you use the rounded 26.2 miles you get 138,336 — about 99 feet short, or roughly 30 seconds for an average runner. Over a race that already hurts, those 99 feet are worth knowing about.

The last mile and the last kilometre
There is a practical difference between the two units at the end of a race. The last kilometre is 3,281 feet; the last mile is 5,280.
If the course markers are in kilometres but your watch is in miles they will not line up, and the gap widens as the race goes on. Over 42 kilometres, a rounded 26.2 miles arrives about 200 metres before the finish line.
The fix is to pick one unit for the whole race and stay with it. Switching mid-race is only a way to confuse yourself at the point where you can least afford it.
